剧情：
本剧改编自普利策获奖作家Richard Russo的小说《正统丑角 Straight Man》，是一个发生在雷尔顿学院里的中年危机故事，由William Henry Devereaux Jr.以第一人称讲述。William在宾夕法尼亚州铁锈地带一所资金严重不足的学院里，担任着并非大家想象中那样的英语系主任。 原著中，William Henry Devereaux Jr.是一个对什么都不太情愿的人。他的这种不情愿一部分来源于自己的性格，他生来就是一个无政府主义者，还有一部分源于他所在的系，比巴尔干半岛还要分裂。在一周的时间里，Devereaux将被一个愤怒的同事弄得鼻青脸肿，想象自己的妻子与学院院长有婚外情，怀疑是否有一位曲线优美的兼职老师试图用桃子核引诱他，并威胁要在当地电视台处决一只鹅。这一过程中，Devereaux将与风流的父亲、对自己年轻时承诺的背弃，以及身体某些重要功能的不祥故障达成和解。
